The What, Where, Why and How of STEM and STEAM at Imagination Station

Our mission is to build creative, lifelong learners.
We use STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to create our range of awesome programmes.

STEM is an approach to learning that combines Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to create robust lessons incorporating all four of these subjects. At Imagination Station, we believe creativity underpins success in all kinds of areas, so we make sure to include artistic elements in all our programmes!

A STEAM approach to learning integrates all five subjects to promote critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and holistic enquiry. Instead of viewing and teaching STEAM as separate subjects, we combine all five into each class, because ultimately they are all related and work together!

When looking at the real world for applications of classroom learning, we can see that science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics are not separate. Artists use principles of chemistry to create and manipulate pigments and textiles. Engineers use psychology and physics to design structures that inspire and excite us. Scientists use emotive language, storytelling and performance techniques to deliver their findings to funders and the public. Entire industries fall between or across STEM and STEAM subjects, like biotechnology, web and product design, 3D modelling, and architecture!

At Imagination Station, we use STEAM in all our classes, including our after school programme and holiday activities. While making movies, we see students engaging with digital technologies. While building and coding battlebots, we see students thinking carefully about the aesthetic design of their robot. Even when just building freely, they’re actively employing both imagination and logical reasoning skills to make their creation functional and fun!

By engaging students in projects that involve the concepts of all STEAM areas, each child is encouraged to use creative thinking, logic, emotion, and reason, and to solve problems that don’t have simple answers. The real world faces issues that don’t fit in a single box, and by building these skills young, the next generation is positioned for success!

Even when just building freely, they’re actively employing both imagination and logical reasoning skills to make their creation functional and fun!

If you’re local to Christchurch, you can join us on Hapori (Level 1) in Tūranga to discover the world of LEGO, or check out our STEAM holiday activities, after school classes and school programmes.
